Teaching the Inauguration

created Jan 18, 2017 09:51 AM

With the presidential inauguration taking place in two days, you may want to use this classroom activity that features excerpts from inaugural addresses by California governors. The activity includes a worksheet that helps students understand the governor's position on the role of the government in the economy and in society. Inaugural address excerpts from Jerry Brown, Pete Wilson, Ronald Reagan, Pat Brown, Goodwin Knight, and Culbert Olson are accompanied by relevant historical context. A classroom discussion regarding historical positions of Republican and Democratic leaders may help students gain insight into today's political landscape.
