WCH: In Schools Program Teachers

Welcome War Comes Home: In Schools Program Teachers!


Program teachers are expected to complete four parts of the program to receive a $200 stipend. Optional University of California units can be purchased separately. 

(1)    Online instructional toolkit

  • Program teachers will adapt one lesson for classroom instruction. Teachers will also collect student work to share at the teacher symposium June 2015. 
    • Curriculum guide to Karl Marlantes' book, What It Is Like to Go to War
    • Selective Service System lesson
  • Two scholar lectures will provide content support.  
    • Professor Rebecca Plant, UCSD, "Military Psychiatry, Combat Exhaustion, and American Manhood During and After War II."  View the recording.  Provide feedback.
    • Professor Kathryn Statler, USD, "Coming Home: Lessons Learned and Not Learned from Vietnam Veterans' Experiences," February 3, 2015, 4pm (PST).

2)    War Comes Home events

  • In support of their multi-year initiative, Cal Humanities’ partners (California Center for the Book, local libraries, UC Humanities Research Institute) are holding hundreds of  events statewide.  These community events are meant to bring together “veterans and their families, writers, and historians to explore how California is welcoming its veterans home.”  Program teachers are given priority registration for  War Comes Home event(s) in their community.  Click here for a full calendar and here for a list of participating libraries. (3)    Online Seminars—Participants will attend three online sessions (4 – 5:30pm) to hear from leading scholars and receive classroom-tested and Standards-aligned curriculum.

(4)    Teacher Symposium:  Program teachers will meet in person to share their War Comes Home teaching experience and student work.

  • Southern California, June 20, 2015 at UC Irvine from 9-3pm.  
  • Northern California, June 27, 2015 at UC Davis from 9-3pm.
